Introduction
The Postgraduate and Research Department of English of the college has a glorious history since 1965. With its Undergraduation programme which was started in 1965 the department very soon widened its boundary with its Post graduation in 1966. In 1998, the department became a Research Department as well. With an incomparable knowledge quotient as its bedrock, the department functions with 29 faculty members who with their distinguished profile bestow incessant laurels on the institution. The fact that 13 staff members currently working in the department are alumni stands testimony to the accomplishments of the department.The department conforms to the vision of the college by imparting quality education to all the students.
Apart from Degree courses, the department also offers Part – II English to students of other departments for four semesters focussing on all the four skills of language learning. It also offers Skill Based Elective Papers to Undergraduate students and Functional Englishto the students of other departments as Non-Major Elective. The department has formulated the syllabi to empower the students to get absorbed in the competitive job market. The students are trained in almost all the streams of Literature that are in trend. The department believes in offering the students a strong base in Literary Theories and Literary Criticism that will enable them to analyse and admire any work of art. Literature and Environment, Professional Writing, Diasporic Writing, Post-Colonial Writing are the special papers taught. The students imbibe the nuances of literature from the first semester and grow up to mature and excel in the multicultural and multilingual aspects of the global language. The Language Lab of the department strengthens the students to be technically sound in developing their understanding in the learning of English Language. The Virtuoso Audio Visual Hall of the department provides the necessary facilities to all the students of Part II English, to enjoy the visual representation of the plays prescribed and it also serves as a Seminar Hall.
With a rich resource of around 2500 books stacked in the Department Library, the department is vibrant with its research activities too. Presently, there are 75 research scholars who have registered for their Ph.D. under the supervision of the faculty members. The Literary Association of the Department - BEACONS, functions throughout the year with lot of activities extended to students of other colleges too. This association aims at kindling and tapping the innate potentials of the students and acts as a platform to nurture and exhibit their artistic and creative abilities.
Being a dynamic department, the staff members tirelessly strive to work towards fulfilling the vision and mission of the institution by practising dedication and diligence. They constantly update themselves and prove to be literary stalwarts by continuously inspiring and motivating the students. Thus our students end up becoming torchbearers of the society by uplifting themselves and others around them. Illustrious alumni of our department have made a mark in various sectors--academic and non- academic.
