Introduction

The Department of Political Science was started in 1960 in a historically important juncture. The government of Tamil Nadu as a policy measure decided to provide collegiate education in Tamil language and as per the recommendation of the high power committee of the time the Department of Political Science was started in Government Arts College to provide collegiate education in Tamil for the first time in the state.

Initially the department provided Under Graduate Programme in both Tamil and English. For many decades the department occupied a unique position in the college as women were admitted in both English and Tamil media, rather uncommon in many other departments in those days.

The Post Graduate Program in Public Administration was started as Self-financing course in the year 2003 and the program was converted into an aided program in the 2007. There was the bifurcation of the department and the subsequent formation of the Department of Public Administration in the year 2011. The Post Graduate Program in Political Science was started in 2014.

The alumni of the department have become distinguished leaders and citizens in the society and contributed to the development of the country. Many have become Member of Parliament, Councilors in Municipal Corporation of Coimbatore, Journalists, University and College Faculties, industrialists etc. The department focusses in empowering the students with knowledge, attitude and skills so that they become successful individually and more important they contribute to society. Apart from the regular curriculum the department conducts Mind Science classes, Life Skills training sessions and Political Skills training classes.
