Introduction


  The Department of Psychology in Government Arts College was established in 1960. It is the oldest department in the college and has a very vast and strong history. Guidance and Counselling Center was started in 1996.To add another feather to its cap in 2012, Postgraduate course (M.Sc.) in Psychology was approved and started functioning.The Department Offers Part-Time and full time M.Phil. & Ph.D. Research Programmes.

  All the staff members in the Psychology Department are Doctorates and have numerous paper publications in National and International journals. They also have wide experience in Research and have received grants from ICSSR, UGC and TANSCHE for their projects and research work. This diverse research environment of the Department of Psychology provides post graduate students with a stimulating setting in which to study the science of psychology and human communication. All the staff members keep abreast of the latest developments in the field of Psychology by attending various national and international conferences, workshops and seminars throughout the year.

  The curriculum for the Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses were revised in the years 2010 and then by latest in 2014.

World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year and various competitions are conducted.

•Guidance and Counselling Centre (approved by the Tamil Nadu government) is offering Counselling for the students and general public free of cost

•Psychology Association conductsguest lectures, workshops, exhibition and seminarsby inviting reputed psychologists, counselors, industrialists and psychiatrists

Periodical self-development programmes are being conducted for the benefit of students. Aptitude, Intelligence and Personality tests are conducted for students of Psychology Department as part of their curriculum in Experimental Psychology and they are given need based counselling and guidance.

• The Guidance and Counselling Centre offers free of cost Counselling for college and school students, company employees, family members of the students and general public

• The Centre also gives Personality Development Counselling and Soft Skills Training to the students of other departments.

• Various psychological assessments are done for the school and college students in and around Coimbatore District, to identify their IQ, Personality and Aptitude.

The meritorious students of this department are given the following prizes every year for their academic achievement:

• Prof. S. Balasubramaniam Endowment Prize for I Rank holder in B.Sc. Psychology.

• Dr. T. Srinivasan Endowment Prize for Best Outgoing Student.

• Dr. R. Santhanalakshmi Endowment Prize for I Rank holder in B.Sc. Psychology.
