Introduction

The Department of Geology was started in 2019 in Government Arts College (Autonomous), Coimbatore. It is an Earth Science / Geo Science Course which focuses on the fields such as Physical Geology, Structural Geology, Paleontology, Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, Crystallography, Mining Geology, Gemology, Environmental Geology, Remote Sensing and GIS, GPS Surveying etc. It gives an experience to the contemporary geospatial technologies and issues in Inter-disciplinary and Multi-disciplinary fields such as Geo-statistics, Geophysics and Geochemistry etc. It will initiate the students and help them in understanding the Earth and Environmental based dynamics of the Earth’s activities in an appropriate manner.

Curriculum is it helpful in cracking UPSC-Geoscientist Exams, UPSC-Indian Forest Service (IFS), UPSC-CSP and Mains, Central/State Pollution Control Boards, Indian Metrological Department (IMD), National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Indian Institute of Mines (IIM), IITs, and also it offers Scholarship from Oil and Natural Gas Company (ONGC) to pursue Masters Degree level. This discipline provides prospective career options like Geospatial Analyst, GIS Engineer, Groundwater Consultant, Geoscientist, Hydrologist, Gem Stone Analyst and Mining Engineer.

For the teaching profession, Geology makes an unavoidable position in Civil Engineering platform; hence, Geologists may get opportunities in B.E., Civil Engineering program. And they may appear for the UGC-CSIR – Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) & Assistant Professor under Earth Science category. After their graduation (B.Sc., Geology), they may pursue M.Sc., Geology / Applied Geology / Archeology / Environmental Science / Oceanography / Marine Science / Meteorology / Atmospheric Sciences / Geophysics / Geospatial Science / Spatial Information Technology / Geo-informatics / Geomatics / Agricultural Sciences / Soil Science etc., and move on to the higher degrees like M.Tech., M.Phil., and Ph.D.,
