Introduction


The teaching of Geography at Government Arts College, Coimbatore was introduced at B.A. level in 1946 in the Department of Geography. An independent and full-fledged Department of Geography was, however, created in 1986. In 1986 M.Phil.,(Part-Time) course was started with 05 of students. Later on 1986 Ph.D.,(Part-Time) was started with aim of more research activities that will support society. Later in the year 2015, M.Phil.,(Full-Time) and in the year 2018 Ph.D., (Full-Time) with the intake of 15 and 16 scholars respectively. The researchers were diverted in diverse fields ranging from Applied Geography, Geography of Resources, Regional Planning, Applied Geomorphology, Agricultural Geography, Cultural Geography, Remote sensing, Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

There are following laboratories in the Department of Geography:-
A Survey Lab, consisting of instruments like Theodolite, Dumpy Level, Prismatic Compass and Gunter’s chain. With these instruments, students can practice the exercises directly on the field.
ACartography Lab consists of Mirror Stereoscope with Binocular, Aerial Photographs and Satellite Imageries and they trace features and map as per their allotted exercises. And also they practice Ordnance Survey (OS) maps, United States Geological Survey (USGS) maps and Survey of India (SoI) topographic maps for their interpretation and analysis.
The GIS lab having facilities of ArcGIS 10.1 version software with a network set of 6 computers and the students and scholars utilize it for input data from GPS which measures the latitudinal and longitudinal positions of the locations and they engage this for practical exercises.
The Computer lab consists of 6 computer, printer and scanner for post graduate students and research scholars.
The present faculty consists of 8 Assistant Professors and one Lab Assistant.
By virtue of its reputation and facilities, the Department of Geography has been attracting students from all over the southern states of India.
The existing three year B.Sc., Geography is spread over six academic semesters via Part I, Part II, Part III and Part IV. Post Graduate M.Sc., system offered with 90 credits consists of core courses.
The Department has its own Library with the collection of 2946 books cover in various branches of Geography.
