Introduction


  The Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments in the college. The Department was started in the year 1948 with Bachelors’ Degree. The Post Graduation in Economics was started in the year 1980. The sanctioned staff strength of the department is 19. The faculty members are appropriately qualified as they are appointed by TRB following the UGC regulations and guidelines. There are two Associate Professors and 17 Assistant Professors. Professors holding Ph.D. Degrees are 17 and two of them are with M.Phil. Degree 11 Professors have cleared UGC - NET/SLET.The Bharathiar University has recognized 11 of the faculty members as research guides for Ph.D. and M.Phil. Programmes.

  The faculty members of the department are members of Board of Studies of various colleges and Universities. They are also members of the Board of Editors of National and International journals. Professors have received certificates of appreciation from international based journals for reviewing articles. Some of the faculty members are invited as resource persons and chairpersons for seminars, conferences and academic programmes conducted in other colleges and Universities. Two minor and 3 major UGC and TANSI funded projects were undertaken in the Department.

  The faculty members frequently publish research articles in reputed National and International Journals, books with ISBN numbers and e-journals. They also present papers in conferences and seminars at the state and national levels. The thrust areas of research conducted are Agricultural Economics, Industrial Economics, Environmental Economics, Public Finance, Development Economics and Women Studies. As part of student development and faculty development, Discussions, Seminars and Conferences are organized through the Department Association.

  The total student strength of the department for both shifts is around 11 percent of the total strength of the college. The Economics Department is profoundly research oriented. Apart from having industrial training in leading units there are research projects for UG and PG students in the final semesters.The total sanctioned strength for M.Phil. and Ph.D. is 40 each. The Research Degrees awarded in the Department for qualified M.Phil. and Ph.D. scholars are 43 and 22 respectively. Some of the noted alumni are Dr.T.C.Mohan, Former Vice Chancellor of Annamalai University, Dr.Viswanathan, Former Registrar, Bharathiar University, Dr.Loganathan, Member, State Planning Commission, Dr.Joseph, Retd. Prof. of Govt. Arts College, Cbe, Dr.C.Annadurai, Former Director of Social Studies, VIT,etc. A few are working in state government service, public sector banks, defence, professors in leading private and aided colleges, teachers in government and private schools, etc.The infrastructure facilities available in the department are Computer Lab with Wi fi connectivity, OHP, LCD Projector, TV, DVD player and two laser printers. The Department library has over 3,000 books and access to over 200 e-journals.
