Introduction

The Department of Chemistry, established in 1963, is today a recognized research centre offering M.Phil. and Ph.D. (FT & PT) programmes in addition to UG and PG programmes. The department has hitherto produced more than 100 M.Phil. and 20 Ph.D.s. Many students have cleared the UGC-CSIR joint JRF exam., GATE and SET exams and obtained Doctoral Degrees from various National and International Institutes. More than 150 research articles have been published in reputed journals. More than 10 research projects have been successfully completed. Currently the department is equipped with modernized instruments like FT-IR and UV-VIS spectrometers for research/academic purposes. Major thrust areas focusing on research by the department is as follows:
Synthesis of bioactive heterocycles and their biological investigation, stereochemical, Molecular docking and DFT studies
Phytochemistry – isolation, characterization and biological investigation
Green chemistry
Coordination complexes and X-ray Crystallography
Nanocomposites – synthesis, characterization and for various applications
Electrochemical corrosion studies using green inhibitors
Organic NLO materials
Adsorption studies for the removal of dyes
The department motivates both UG and PG students to participate in inter-collegiate competitions including quiz and paper presentations. Our students have brought laurels to the department in the form of prizes, overall championship, etc. Both UG and PG students are doing one year project work as part of their curriculum. UG and PG students are also encouraged to participate and present papers in National and International seminars/conferences/workshops to update their knowledge. Free coaching for JAM & NET is conducted by department faculty throughout the year. School of Distance Education (SDE), Bharathiar University, Coimbatore has identified and approved the Department of Chemistry, GAC to conduct Personal Contact Program (PCP) classes for Post-Graduate program in chemistry under the distance education mode on weekends and holidays (from the inception of the Program, 2004). More than 2000 students across India are benefitted from this program.
Further, Department of Chemistry in collaboration with Prof. Ramasubbu Jeyaraman Science Foundation (RJSF), Chennai conducts the State Level Proficiency Test (SLPT) in Chemistry (on par with UGC-CSIR examination) every year from 2012. Our College is one of the centres in TamilNadu in conducting the SLPT exam. Many students from Coimbatore region get selected for one month Chemistry Research Drive Program (CRD) conducted by RJSF and cleared UGC-CSIR JRF/GATE/SET exam. Thus the Department of Chemistry is a pioneer in motivating the students to challenge the NET exam in Coimbatore region.
